Ukkokei Ramen Ron, The Best Ramen in Town!

Back in high school, I had a very nasty teacher who made the class believe that I do nothing but daydream. She would continue to torment me making her 60-minute Algebra class feel like the longest hour of my high school life. Boy, I'm so glad I only had her for a year and we never crossed path since. *phew*

Even how often I look back, I know in my heart that I wasn't daydreaming, dozing off maybe but not daydreaming. I think the only time one gets to daydream are during times when we have experienced something truly amazing, agree? I daydream about shopping in Hong Kong, enjoying the waters of Boracay, getting a massage, sinking my teeth in my friend Irene's Quezo de Bola cheesecake and the list goes on and on. Now tell me, why on earth would I daydream during an Algebra class?

Yesterday, Paul and I met up with half of The Foodie Club for lunch. I was extra excited for this as we headed to Ukkokei Ramen Ron along Pasay Road in Makati which has been on my list for a really long time. I did my research and drooled over photos of their famous Tan Tan Men, Pork Gyoza, and the Miso Chashu Ramen.

So excited were we that we arrived before everyone else did. It was good thing too as reservation was not allowed so I had to give my name to the receptionist to get a table. The restaurant opened at 1130AM and imagine we were already part of the waiting list as we arrived at 12NN.

The wait was quite long but we didn't mind. I was dead set on dining at Ukkokei Ramen Ron and I'm glad my friends share the same sentiments too. Turnover was pretty quick thus we were called in after 30 minutes.

There are three types of ramen soup to choose from: Shio (salt), Shoyu (soy) and Miso (fermented soy). Since we both wanted to have a taste of everything, we got the lunch set which is a good deal given it costs just about the same as a bowl of ramen.

I got Set A (Php. 380) which consists of a full bowl of ramen, chahan (fried rice), gyoza and salad. I chose the Ukkokei Miso Chashu and an additional order of butter and corn.

Initially, I thought the butter and corn is a set so you have to order together but looking at the bill, I later realized that you can just choose one or the other. I should have just gotten the additional butter since I can't take corn. Healthy eaters might cringe at the thought of adding butter into your ramen soup but believe me, it makes a big difference. The butter adds more aroma to the soup making it richer and more satisfyingly delicious. Half of the corn in the bowl went to Paul who happily poured it into his bowl of ramen as well.

What can I say about my set lunch -- I love the chahan as always and I paired this with the gyoza which was one of the best in town. It's pack with meat (no fat or extenders found), pan-fried to perfection and we get to mix our own sauce too! I happily finished all four gyozas by myself! I love macaroni salad and I'm glad this was the type of salad served to us.

As for the noodles, one bite and I knew why people would gladly line up to dine at Ukkokei Ramen Ron. The noodles were perfectly al dente, the soup very rich and flavorful and I love that the quantity of chashu was just right not making the ramen too filling. Still, I had to split half of my ramen soup with Paul as I had a little bit too much carbs in one sitting. I don't normally drink the soup but here, our bowls were wiped clean as we couldn't resist taking slurps after slurps after slurps.

Paul got Set C (Php. 380) which had half a bowl of ramen, a plate of curry rice, gyoza and salad. He chose the Ukkokei Shoyu with additional order of Chashu (Php. 120) as my husband just loveeesss meat! I was able to try two spoonfuls of his curry rice and I loved it! It's authentic and the sauce was rich, not too spicy yet bursting with flavor. He obviously enjoyed his set very much as not a single grain of rice or a piece of noodle was left.

Yummy Pork Chashu

The only complain I have is the poor air-conditioning which was rather weak leaving you sweating after finishing your bowl of piping hot ramen noodles. Still, this will not stop us from visiting Ukkokei Ramen Ron more often whenever we crave for a good bowl of ramen noodles. We're glad to find out too that they use chicken broth making it safe for non-pork or non-beef eaters out there.

This is the start of our deep love affair with Ukkokei's ramen and we expect for this to last a lifetime.

Now, this is what I'd considering something worth daydreaming for. ;)

Tips:
Better to go during lunch to enjoy the very reasonable lunch sets + the iced Japanese tea is free while there's a charge during dinner time. However, the Tan Tan Men is only available at night.

Ukkokei Ramen Ron is located at the Ground Floor of the Tesoro Building, 822 A. Arnaiz Ave., (formerly Pasay Road) in Makati City. Call them at 856-4588.
