Cakes by Louise : The Best Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake in town?

Image
Whenever I get to look back at my childhood, I can't help but feel that life was wayyy simpler back then. No cellphones, no internet, no cable TV.. sometimes I do wonder how we managed to survive but we did! We learned to play with our siblings, our neighbors, we find fun in reading the comic strips in the newspaper, we became creative and somewhat entrepreneurial at a young age, we had lots of fun.  Food was also more or on the simpler side back then. It need not to be Instagrammable but it's one that's legit delicious and truly comforting. Take cakes for example, I remember growing up enjoying the kind of chocolate cake that has a nice spongey chiffon texture, the frosting with just the right amount of sweetness and with that creamy caramel center to seal the deal. Nothing fancy, not even with those gold foils or molten centers. Don't get me wrong, innovation is always good and I'm so happy that we have a wider range of choices today but it still sure feels good t...

Choco Liquor Cakes by Maricar -- Igniting the Choco Lover in You

Image
Sometime last year, the trend of having delicious and truly indulgent chocolate cakes baked in tin cans became a fast rising trend in the country. Suddenly, almost all bakers, restaurants, and dessert shops came out with their own version. One trying to outdo the other and most recently, some even try to experiment with other flavors apart from the usual chocolate cake which I find to be very ingenious. I've featured a number of my favorites here and I still stand by my honest opinion on them. However, if you really want to try the one that I believed started it all..or in millennial speak, the OG , then ladies and gentlemen, I present to you -- Choco Liquor by Maricar Reyes-Poon . I remember sometime back in 2015, I have read blog reviews from fellow foodie bloggers about the actress' mouthwatering dessert creation. "This heavenly decadent chocolate cake won the hearts of our foodies, with its very rich and moist chocolatey goodness. We like that the quantity of wine ...

Chocolate Dream Cake from The Culinary Studio, San Juan

Hello 2019!  I honestly can't believe 2018 just flew by so fast. Just like that, my twins are now 14 months old (wow!) and they've literally went from them being tiny, fragile newborns to active, super talkative toddlers. Over-all, 2018 was a good year for us. It's this year that we've learned so much as new parents, as freelance professionals and as start-up entrepreneurs. I got to admit that at first, it wasn't easy. I've been part of the corporate world for more than a decade and I'm someone who loves schedules, routines and specific job scopes. It took a while but I feel like I'm slowly getting there. For one thing, I do value the time that I get to spend with my twins. I know this is considered a luxury and I am forever grateful to have the opportunity to be at the front row as I watch them grow. I face the New Year with a lot of optimism. I hope that it will be a bigger year than what 2018 was to us. I pray for good health and safety for everyo...

Chocolate Inception : Le Sucre Lab's Chocolate Dream Cake

Image
Sweet dreams are indeed made of these. It's the kind that comes in pretty copper tin cans and when you open it, nope! it's not your grandmother's sewing kit, but a mouthwatering chocolate inception-like cake. It's chocolate over chocolate over chocolate over more chocolate. Don't believe me? Read on...  I first heard about Le Sucre Lab's Chocolate Dream Cake (Php. 475) from @masarapba on Instagram . It's this funny, super duper witty yet completely anonymous Instagram account that gives you the lowdown on the yummiest and not so yummiest food in the metro. You get honest-to-goodness reviews that's written in a really funny tone. I haven't met the person behind this handle yet he/she/it (yes, the account once claimed that it's actually a plant) but I've tried some of the recommended items and I was really impressed with her taste. From Tender Juicy Chick n Cheese Hotdogs to which Paul can't understand why I suddenly came home fr...

H Cuisine in Quezon City -- Home of the most awesome Angus Beef Belly

Image
When I got an invite to visit H Cuisine by Chef Hannah Herrera, I suddenly remembered the time when I visited the Corinthian Hills Weekend Market 3 years ago where I first learned about H Cuisine and was able to try a couple of their dishes. Sadly, my memory is pretty terrible that I couldn't really remember exactly what dishes I was able to try but I figured that it must be good as I do not have any bad memories about it. Together with Richard and Irene , Ro and Peter , Jane , Abet and Joan , Paul and I had an intimate dinner at H Cuisine hosted by none other but Chef Hannah herself. We were led up to the second floor where two round tables were prepared just for us. At one side is a buffet spread featuring several dishes that H Cuisine specializes in. To start the evening, Chef Hannah conducted a simple cooking demo showing us how to cook her best-selling Angus Beef Belly and the many variations of it such as the Angus Fried Rice and the Angus Beef Panini. Sadly, al...
